It is crucial that children become proficient readers, learn good penmanship and master the basic math facts as a foundation for the rest of their education. We believe that children achieve higher overall levels of academic performance if formal instruction during the early years of home school is focused on these crucial subject areas.
We believe that topics from other subject areas can be used to enrich the home school experience. Children exposed to educationl television and quality computer games learn a wealth of information in science and social studies. But direct parental instruction, however, needs to focus on foundational skills for children to become independent learners.
The staff of Eagle Academy provides parents in Level One with assistance in creating individualized home instruction plans for their children. Along with tailor-making these instructional plans, technical support from the staff at Eagle Academy is only an e-mail away to help the home-schooling parent.
The staff at Eagle Academy has reviewed literally dozens of curricula before adopting those which we believe to be based on the most sound principles of human learning and brain science. We are more than happy to refer interested parents to the body of scientific literature that substantiates our selection curricula.
When a child is enrolled in Level One at Eagle Academy, parents receive an individualized home instruction plan, a list of books and materials which need to be purchased, and technical assistance as needed. We will also recommend computer programs to use with your child depending on their interests and abilities.
Parents will need to allocate an hour each day to direct instruction of the core skills in the areas of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Students will then have access for 2-3 hours each day to educational television, computer programs and library books to complete the school day.
During these early years of home school it is imperative that child be helped to learn the habit of scholarship. This is best accomplished when parents allocate a fixed period of time each day when studying is the priority. The parent may choose to begin the child's habit of completing a homework assignment by beginning small and assigning projects of slightly increasing level as time goes on. Opportunities for reward and praise abound here, also.
Children during this stage of home instruction need to learn to be responsible for their own share of the family's chores and self-care. In the long run it is self-disciplined and self-motivated children who will excel academically. Parents foster these attitudes during the formative years of home instruction.
We strongly encourage parents of children in Level One to explore options for their children to learn another language from a native speaker or other educated person and to become involved with making music.
