ARITHMETIC
The textbook Saxon Math 6/5 reviews and expands all of the mathematical content introduced in Saxon Math 5/4, an integrated basic mathematics course. The emphasis on problem solving continues as students are called upon to apply mathematical tools and techniques to real mathematical situations through word problems. Math 6/5 includes whole number concepts and computation, mental computation, patterns and functions, measurement, and statistics and probability. Work with fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and geometry is significantly expanded. Students are also introduced to percentages and negative numbers. Our student will be completing four lessons per week this school year.
READING
This year our student will be reading a real books for literature, these books will include Van Loon’s The Story of the Bible; Farmer Boy; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Magician’s Nephew; and The Bronze Bow. The student will be using study guides provided by Eagle Academy as he studies these books. These study guides include recommended activities, vocabulary, comprehension and application projects.
SPELLING
The student will be working on word lists generated from his own written work, his reading materials across the curriculum and patterned word lists.
WRITING/ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Our student will study the three basic steps to language success: grammar, usage, and mechanics (i.e. how our language functions), using Scott Foresman’s Language Skills and Use: Edition 4 textbook and worktext. The text presents grammar, usage, and mechanics lessons at the beginning of each unit. These are followed by lessons in listening, speaking, vocabulary and composition. The basic concepts introduced in the first half of the text are reviews and are expanded in the remaining units. Writing instruction is integrated with other language skills. The second half of each unit consists of a cluster of writing process lessons which relate the grammar instruction just taught to a form of written expression, such as the descriptive paragraph. All the individual writing assignments are structured according to the same four-step process: prewriting, writing, revising and presenting. The text uses excellent literature as writing models to encourage students to relate what they read to how they write. This writing cluster follows four steps: (1) study of literature of models for writing, (2) listening to literature as preparation for writing, (3) building vocabulary for writing, and (4) writing in response to what has been learned from models and instruction. The student will complete two units from this text each quarter and do the exercises in the associated worktext. The student will also be learning library skills and how to use sources of information from this text with its appendix on study skills.
GEOGRAPHY
Our student's study of geography will be integrated into his study of physical science. He will also comlete a unit study on China and Japan which will include an overview of geography, history, religion, arts, family and daily life of people from these other cultures.
HISTORY
The student will be using the Oxford History of US: An Age of Extremes by Joy Hakim as the text for studying American History this year. This book is about the United States during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentiethth century. Our student will be investigating famous individuals and inventions from this time period and creating a journal of his efforts. He will complete one chapter each week in this textbook. SCIENCE
Our student will study Earth Science this year. As a resource he will be using the textbook Focus on Earth Science published by Merrill Publishing.
ART/MUSIC
This year our student will be learning to read music and to create perspective drawings.
PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION
This year our student will be working on conditioning and strength training for physical education. He will be learning about nutrition, basic first aid for and emergency preparedness for health. Tobacco education will be integrated into the history lessons.
