Enrollment in Eagle Academy means that your child participates in studies at a private preparatory academy by way of the family computer. (Under certain circumstances, we can even ship you a computer ready for work.) Our staff will evaluate your child's academic work, help to develop an academic portfolio for your child, provide objective testing, and maintain academic transcripts.
Enrollment provides your child with access to Eagle's protected World Wide Web (WWW) curriculum pages so that she can readily access resources available from the National Information Infrastructure (NII) for her academic studies. A syllabus or course of instruction, assignments and projects for the student to complete, suggestions for curriculum materials and providers, and quarterly lesson plans are all posted on-line. Students enrolled in Eagle Academy can have questions answered and conduct discussions with us by e-mail.
Parents are the best judge of how much supervision a particular child will need on a day-to-day basis. Self-directed children with good computer skills are able to participate in the Academy with very little parental guidance. Younger less-mature children will need more direct oversight of their school work by their parents. In the final analysis, parents are ultimately responsible for their children's education - whether they opt for our services, the services of others, or for education in the public schools.
Parents of Eagle Academy students can request access to our virtual classrooms so they can meet their children in cyberspace during the work day. We encourage parents to contact their children on-line.
The tuition for enrollment in Eagle Academy at Levels 1, 2 and 3 is $250 per ten-week quarter. Families in financial need may request tuition reduction for enrolling multiple children in Eagle Academy. Tuition for the second child can be reduced to $150 per quarter and additional children from the family will not be charged tuition.
A non-refundable $50 registration fee is charged for a student to enroll in Eagle Academy. This fee covers the administrative costs associated with record keeping for the individual student. Parents are responsible for purchasing and administering the Iowa Basic Achievement Test each spring. We can provide help with this task. Copies of the results this test need to be forwarded to Eagle Academy to become a part of the student's permanent records. Parents are also responsible for purchasing books and supplies for the school year. Parents will often be able to use the resources of their local public library to help defray the expense of books. (Don't forget to participate in their annual fund drive, even if at a modest level. Your librarians will appreciate the fact that you recognized them.) For books that your library doesn't have and which must be purchased for your child's studies, many of these will become part of the family's library.
The annual tuition for Eagle High is $1,000 per year for two required Eagle High courses.
Obviously high school students take more than two courses per year, but our students need not take all their course work through Eagle High. We stress that, for parents who are able, Eagle High students may exercise the option of taking electives at local junior colleges, from other distance learning providers, or can work through a pre-approved, "home-brewed" syllabus they provide for our review. Please see High School Electives section, below for more information.
The mandatory $50 registration fee and yearly achievement testing also applies to high school students. It is extremely important for high school students to arrange to take the PSATs and SATs through their local school districts as these are used to gain admission to colleges.
Eagle Academy maintains transcripts for enrolled students, updating them as families provide us with documentation of completion of individual courses taken elsewhere. The transcripts also serve to document achievements in sports, the arts, music, and physical education. Parents are responsible for administering standardized achievement tests on a yearly basis and forwarding copies of the results. Parents are responsible for the costs of books, supplies and tuition fees for courses taken at other locations.
This plan includes all the services offered with regular enrollment plan and assignment of a personal mentor to work with the student. Mentors meet with students in cyberspace on a weekly basis for a minimum of two hours, engage the student in discussions across the curriculum, and grade essay exams. Eagle mentors are qualified professionals who offer the kinds of academic interaction available at exclusive preparatory schools and private colleges. Eagle Academy's virtual classrooms provide a setting where students can meet their mentors as well as their classmates. This service is ideal for students from technologically affluent families who are already comfortable in cyberspace. Mentorship can provide busy parents with flexibility, enabling home schooling to be a viable option for their family. The mentor will relieve the parents of some of the responsibility for supervising the student's day-to-day academic progress, but parents must review their students' progress at least on a weekly basis. The additional fee for the mentored service is $100.00 per month per child.
Eagle High students enjoy a great deal of flexibility in meeting the requirements for earning an Eagle High diploma. This includes elective credit performed through Eagle Academy, and elsewhere.
Eagle High students may choose to take additional courses which are offered through Eagle High. Tuition for these courses is $530 per course and these courses are also available to students who are not enrolled in Eagle High.
For those seeking credit towards an Eagle High diploma for work completed elsewhere, we review such academic work and award appropriate academic credit for qualifying work on the Eagle High transcript (fees for this service range from $30-$300 per course). The typical fee for evaluating a mathematics course is $30. Eagle High will send the student a final exam to be taken under the supervision of a proctor. We grade the exam and award the academic credit and course grade based on the final exam. A $300-level fee for evaluating a course would be for those instances when Eagle High needs to hire a consultant with specific, higher-level training in order to evaluate a project completed for credit in higher mathematics or an advanced science, for example. In any of these circumstances the written evaluation of the project becomes a part of the student's permanent portfolio. The evaluation serves to document the quality of the students original work. A less expensive alternative that serves the same purpose is for the student to publish in a peer-reviewed journal. We negotiate these fees with families prior to students performing these academics, whenever possible. (Back up)
Eagle Academy operates on a forty week, four quarter academic year. This allows students to have one week off each quarter. The non-refundable registration fee is due when the student is enrolled at Eagle Academy or Eagle High. Tuition for our students is due, in advance, in quarterly installments. Fees for mentors are due at the beginning of each month. Mentors are paid monthly after submitting a report of monthly activities with the student over the course of the month.
